Turkish Mine Accident

A power transformer blew up Tuesday during shift change at the mine in the western Turkish city of Soma, sparking a choking fire deep inside. 274 miners are known to be dead mostly due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The death toll is still growing. Authorities worked to pump in good air into the mine, so they could get in. However, sending in oxygen likely would "increase the likelihood that the fire would grow and continue to put those miners at risk." A series of unfortunate events for Soma, Turkey.

Target Removes CEO

Gregg Steinhafel, 59, had been Target's CEO since 2008. Board of executives decided that it is now time for new leadership for the company. He was removed from his position as CEO on Monday in the wake of the devastating data breach that hurt Target's number three spot in US's top retailers list. The Minneapolis-based company named Chief Financial Officer John Mulligan as interim chief executive, and Roxanne Austin, a member of Target's board of directors, as interim non-executive chair of the board. Following the replacement, the company will spend multi-billion dollars expanding into Canada.

Coach Profits Plummeting

Coach Inc. sales are plunging due to handbag shoppers taking their foot traffic and dollars to Micheal Kors and other rivals. The company targets mostly upper middle class and the high class populations with its $600 handbags. Coach said profits fell 20% amid a steep drop in sales in North America. Sales will continue to fall through the rest of the year, the company said. The company is trying to expand its products by producing more lifestyle items like clothing and accessories vs. just handbags. Coach rivals include Vera Bradley, Kate Spade, Micheal Kors, and Tommy Hilfiger.

China is Fat

The People's Republic of China is following in the USA footsteps and getting fat. Experts say that Chinese soldiers are getting significantly chubbier. According to a report in the PLA Daily, a new study finds China’s soldiers are, on average, two centimeters taller and have waistlines five centimeters broader than 20 years ago. The fatter servicemen are now in need of bigger equipment because they don't fit into the tanks designed for the human body 30 years ago.
